Was macht afrikanische Identität aus? Wie gestaltet sich das Christentum in Afrika? Entlang der Betrachtung des afrikanischen Kontextes der christlichen Botschaft formuliert diese theologische Topographie Afrikas die Bedeutung kultureller Werte für eine moderne Auseinandersetzung mit der Glaubenswelt. Afrikanische Glaubenswirklichkeit präsentiert sich durchweg facettenreich: In theologischer Perspektive ist nicht nur nach dem Christentum in Afrika zu fragen, sondern nach den Formen einer genuin afrikanischen Religiosität, deren besonderer Gehalt in der Verehrung Gottes und der Gemeinschaft mit den Ahnen besteht. In diesem Kontext gilt es, die Ausformungen der christlichen Theologie in Afrika zu reflektieren. The question of whether life exists beyond death remains one of the most pertinent of our existence, and theologians continue to address what relevance the answer has for our life in the present. In this book, William J. Hoye uses the phenomenon of emergence - the way higher forms of existence arise from a collection of simpler interactions - as a framework for understanding and defending the concept of eternal life, showing how it 'emerges' from our present life, our human longing for fulfilment and happiness, and our striving for knowledge of reality. Hoye uses the work of Karl Rahner and Thomas Aquinas to explore questions concerning suffering, the ultimate relevance of morality, and how the fundamental idea of responsibility changes when viewed eschatologically. Contemporary reasons for denying an afterlife are examined critically and extensively. This book will be of great interest to those studying systematic theology, theological anthropology and Catholic theology.

Comment penser le salut en Jésus-Christ aujourd'hui, dans une modernité qui semble si souvent déconstruire la foi et lui être hostile ? Peut-on imaginer à frais nouveaux la condition de l'Église et des chrétiens dans un contexte de sécularisation qui se mondialise? Les formes d'expression de la foi ne sont-elles pas à reconsidérer dans ce cadre, selon l'esprit même de la tradition? Ce sont ces questions fondamentales, mais aussi bien d'autres, comme la place des femmes et l'avenir des ministères, la prise en compte des mentalités contemporaines ou le rôle des laïcs qui sont débattues sans complexe dans cet ouvrage. En effet, pour mieux témoigner de l'Évangile, l'Église ne doit-elle pas être conduite à faire des choix nouveaux, afin de favoriser une « dispersion évangélique dans le monde » ? Avec d'autres, le père Joseph Moingt, interrogé par de nombreux chrétiens et en dialogue avec eux, en est convaincu : c'est bien l'Évangile qui sauvera l'Église, puisqu'elle en est la servante.
